BEHIND THE LENS

BEHIND THE LENS

I am a 22-year-old Italian student with a newborn passion for photography. I am trying to evolve this passion in parallel to my university studies in psychology: they both help each other in developing a new, different point of view.

I met photography for the first time in New York, where I purchased my first semi-professional camera: since then, I have tried to ameliorate as an autodidact.

My inspiration comes from everything I can observe in the context in which I am: the light, the people around, the location of the objects, the contrast between the subjects, shapes and colors.
I try to think about how the typical image could look like, how anybody represent it, what framing you expect to see. That’s the moment when I try to take a different picture, a not annoying perspective, to present unexpected shooting, to create a representation not with platitudes.

I’m creating a personal style, as an autodidact: I prefer close up framings with a good focus on details, but I’m also trying to learn using the depth of field to give more life to the image, to not make it flat. I want the observer to get completely absorbed by the shot and emotionally touched, at least I try. I also like people looking carefully at the details of the photography, and that’s why I’m very dedicated in the construction of the image: I want everything in place to create an appropriate natural frame.

My style also changes due to the subjects: with people, that I always try to catch unexpectedly, I pay attention to the situation, the contrast in their gesture and expressions, also in the way they dress or act.
I try to make the shot as concentrated, significant and spontaneous as possible. With landscapes, instead, the style completely changes: I alternate long shots and distinctive glimpses of nature and contrast between colors, if I can.
The photos of the masks are structured as if they were portraits. I try to show the gesture and the body language, since the facial expressions are almost completely hidden.

I have decided not to use photoretouch, only in extreme cases in which I need to modulate the luminosity or exposition of the image. I prefer people to appreciate my work for what it is, not for what it should be.
